But the reality didn't fully sink in until Christopher
returned home, to a party with his friends.
"Rodeo Drive and Beverley Hills were part of a fantasy
world.It wasn't real until I could say to my friends -- 'Look,here
And for his daughter, Emma, 8, the Emmy made a fairly
impressive show and tell at school.
For Christopher, it's a heady climb from those early days of
writing music on borrowed equipment in the lounge room,
just five years ago.
Emmy or not, those early awards will always claim a special
place and cannot be usurped.
Broadband and modern technology now mean that
Christopher can retreat to his imagination at any time
without leaving his Ormiston house.
"I couldn't do it any other way.I just go downstairs and I get
to play with big boys toys the whole time. I'm a complete
hermit. If I had to go to an office to write this, I would never
make it home. It's very intense.I can lock myself away and just
write - day or night. The furthest I go is the local shops, "
A prodigy on piano as a child, Christopher has perfect
"The music just happens in my head. Recording it is a
mechanical thing - just something that reproduces what is
happening in here. I frequently write manuscript by hand.To
be honest, I try not to analyse it too much. I'm too frightened
of losing it,"he said.
Certainly, it's otherwise quiet at the Elves' house.
"I find I have to listen to specific music. If I'm around other
stuff it distracts me when I'm scoring a show. I have to stay
The best scores however tend to be those that happen
"Sometimes you get too clever and convoluted and it's not
real. The most effective music can take about 10 minutes
An example of this is the current Surf Life Saving
advertisement, the music of which has now been gifted to
the Surf Life Savers and which started a deluge of phone calls
for the score.
"This sort of music is a very pure form of communication,"
Currently, Christopher 's new fantasy world involves a
robot dog in the series K9, a Doctor Who spinoff 26-episode
series shot in Brisbane.
He is also completing the musical scores for 26 half
hour episodes of Sumo Mouse to be screened on Channel 10
"There are chances for a composer to do big sweeping
John Williams moments. I don't really write the typical kid's
score. I like to write bigger than that,"he said.
Christopher already has a swag of wins for compositions
for advertisement and television scores.
"The APRA awards are very personal and it's nice to be
voted by your own peers. The industry here is so small that it
has a family feel. But the Emmys is a whole new ballgame
where people start lobbying for nomination. I would like to
think it's the music that gets you nominated, "he said.
Behind the scenes and essential to the creative process is
Le-Anne, a business partner who keeps outside distractions
at bay and also works with their sound designer Dale Warren
who lives at their Melbourne-based sound studio.
"I'm his barrier from the outside world. Christopher
is brilliant at music but rubbish at everything else. All of
our friends understand that if Christopher is working,he can't
"The strange thing is that when he's working, he spends
more time with his characters than his own family. When he
finished Animalia -- he came upstairs and said 'I've finished'
and then he started crying,"Lee-Anne said.
Christopher still smiles fondly as he describes his favourite
characters -- Gbubu the green gorilla and his soulmate Iggy
the tiny iguana.
"I like to think the motifs for their characters provide a
subconscious layer -- putting back in that extra dimension.
And while it may be complimentary for a person to notice the
music, to me it is truly working when people don't notice it."
"It's a strange situation really that you can be at home
looking at the birds and the koalas in your closeted existence
and make an impact globally. It's a normal, everyday existence.
I've got the best job in the world. Life doesn't get any better
than this,"he said.
