Investing Myths and Mistakes
The Secret behind the Solar Systems
MYTH 3 - Having a well diversified
portfolio means that an investor can
take on more risk.
This mistake has been made clearly evident in
recent years. A common strategy has been to
build up a more diverse portfolio of investments,
less dependant on equities and with greater
exposure to risk assets. This has led to a reduction
in government bonds and cash investments and
investors have taken on more investments which
are not defensive. While I still say there is a strong
case for leveraging (especially in a recovery) there
is still a case for these types of asset classes.Metals
such as gold and silver have been a safe house and
provide a hedge against inflation which may rear
its ugly head sooner rather than later. Cash (there
are different types) is still king in difficult times
and should form part of the portfolio in all
seasons, good or bad.
The blow torch over the last year with the
global financial crisis (GFC) has taught many a
hard lesson. Fortunately, our Governments have
placed a floor under the price of residential
housing (less than $500,000) in Australia and this
softened the blow to property prices. In the May
2009 budget, the theme was "nation building for
recovery" with billions assigned to new
infrastructure. But with government debt
continuing to build (and some infrastructure
projects cancelled) the future is still unclear. In
order to stimulate housing demand from
upgraders and investors, interest rates will need
to stay low for as long as possible.
The sustainability of any Budget is dependent
on ensuring that personal tax rates and incentives
are properly set. The 2009-10 taxation thresholds
were improved (now 30% for $35k-$80k and 38%
for $80k-$180k) and from Oct until Dec this year
the First Home Owner Grant will continue but will
be reduced from $14,000 to $10,500 for
established homes, and from $21,000 to $14,000
for newly built homes. BIS Shrapnel's Building in
Australia 2009-2024 report stated that the new
home market is predicted to experience a 21%
increase in housing startups, to 160,000 in
2009/10. Again, the strength of the upturn in
construction will depend on the continuation of
low interest rates. All this points to a ticking clock
and next year may well reveal a strong cycle of
activity as many feel compelled to enter the
An overall strategy which includes buffers,
defensive assets, property and shares will always
do better in most cycles. A diversified portfolio is
the investor's primary defence against disaster
and reduces risk to its lowest possible limit whilst
still delivering return on equity.

Many people are still confused about
the different solar energy options for
heating water or powering our
homes. Solar energy is the broad term for
capturing the Sun's light and heat.
This energy is transformed via photovoltaic
(PV) panels or engines into electricity that can be
used many ways such as heating water and
spaces or driving appliances.
Different systems are required to either solar
heat water or solar power homes.
More and more roofs are now being decorated
with PVs for power, PVs and tanks for hot water
and / or absorber blankets for heating pools.
SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEMS specifically heat
water for use around our homes. The most
common solar water heaters are evacuated tube
or glazed flat plate collectors. Unglazed plastic
collectors that look like black rubber blankets
are used for heating swimming pools.
While it is common for solar hot water systems
to gravity feed by having the tank located with
the solar collector on the roof, it is also possible
for the tank to be located on the ground. More
pumping between collector and tank will occur
with ground based units.
SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS operate in the
following manner. A number of PVs (depends on
the watts of each panel and the output you
require) and an inverter are installed to the
house. The sun hits the PVs creating DC
electricity. This electricity is then converted by an
inverter into 240V AC electricity.
Systems connected to the electricity grid,
common in urban areas, can feed surplus
electricity back to the grid.
Remotely connected systems, currently
commoner in isolated areas, feed the DC
electricity to a regulator which sends the right
charge to batteries. 12 volt appliances can be run
directly off the batteries or the current can be
distributed to an inverter for conversion as per
the grid based system for 240V appliances.
Now with the Federal Government incentives
- Solar Credits program for solar power and the
$1600 rebate for solar hot water - why not join
the solar system yourself?
