The power of delayed gratification
How long did your Easter Eggs last? A day,
a week, or longer? Was any restraint
exerted? How typical of you was that --
to eat it all in one go or to extend the pleasures
of the delicious chocolate over a longer period?
How you eat your Easter Eggs may epitomise
your approach to many things and the
corresponding results you get - instant or
A landmark study, begun in the 1960s, known as
the Marshmallow Test, showed enduring benefits
of an early ability to delay gratification. Four year
olds were given a choice of having one
marshmallow now or two if they waited 20 minutes
(by themselves). Over a decade later, those with the
ability to wait (those who delayed gratification) had
higher academic and social functioning. More
recent studies by Martin Seligman and colleagues
concluded that "failure to exercise self-discipline"
contributes greatly to students not matching up to
their intellectual potential.
It might be an Easter Egg now, which may seem
trivial as it is just once a year, however, what if
those same emotions, thoughts or impulses lead
to wanting ("must have") it now -- whatever 'it' is?
Be it something to eat, drink, smoke, have, buy, say
or do? What is the impact of such impulsive --
usually habitual - reactions on your life? Your
health, relationships, bank account or waistline?
Sometimes, it can be very costly. Conversely, the
exercise of self-discipline and delayed
gratification is a common feature of personal and
How then to experience the benefits of delayed
gratification in the exercise of self-discipline?
A key to making any change is a degree of
awareness, which in impulse control, involves
understanding the difference between having and
acting on an urge (be it an emotion or thought). With
this understanding, learn to make better decisions
by controlling the impulse to act, identifying
alternative actions (distractions can play a role here)
and their consequences before acting.
Try waiting a while in the pursuit of making
better decisions; for what once seemed so urgent,
is likely to change or perhaps even pass
completely to the point that the urge no longer
exists. However, how you wait out the time till the
urge passes is important -- focusing on the object
of your desire won't do it. That said, balance
savouring the pleasures in the present moment in
moderation, with being mindful of the future, and
learning from the past. There's plenty of power
(and virtue) in exercising discipline and delaying
gratification. Try it and reap the benefits in all
aspects of your life.
