Having a few chooks in your backyard can
provide an enormous number of benefits.
They provide you with eggs, chicken manure
for your garden, eat much of your organic waste,
aerate the soil, eat your weeds and a range of
bugs, make great friends for the children and are
generally fun and entertaining to watch.
They are very sociable, intelligent and like small
groups so don't be surprised if they adopt your
family. There have a definite pecking order and
are fairly conservative so don't like dramatic
changes to their living or food conditions.
If they are in a comfortable environment, hens
will start laying quite regularly from six months
providing you with daily nutrition.
Free ranging chickens is preferred supported
with a comfortable chicken coop. The coop
should be secure (from predators from above,
below and all around), regularly cleaned and
contain roosting boxes.
Free ranging chickens need only a few cups of
grain and grit to support what they scrounge for
themselves. They will need access to dirt so they
can have dust baths.Make sure they don't get into
your favourite plants as they can get over zealous
in their scratching.
You can give them many of your kitchen scraps
and if you plant things such as comfrey, clover,
lucerne etc they will happily eat these also.
You can store their seed and grit with dried
rosemary, neem, eucalypt, melaleuca or tea tree
leaves to protect it from rats, mice and cockroaches.
Keep an eye on the health of your 'girls'to make
sure they are alert, breathing easily, glossy, bright
eyed and free of scale.
Avoiding overcrowding will help keep them
happy and healthy. Redland City Council by-laws
allow you to keep :
• up to 6 chickens on properties between
500m2 and 2000m2
• up to 12 chickens on properties > 2001m2
neighbour's dwelling and 1m from boundaries
A wonderful organisation called Homes for
Hens buys and for a small donation re-homes
hens from egg laying cages into happy free
range back yard gardens. The 'girls' get a new
lease on life and you get to do a good deed, have
home grown eggs and lots of other benefits.
