We all know from our own experience
just how good positive emotions feel.
It feels good to experience the joy of
spontaneous playfulness, interest when
exploring something new, contentment from
reflecting on having achieved a desired goal,
and love toward someone special in your life.
However, such positive emotions provide us
with so much more than just feel-good
experiences in the moment.
The broaden-and-build model of positive
emotions by Barbara Fredrickson addresses why,
and highlights how, positive emotions benefit us.
It illustrates how positive emotions broaden
people's attention (big picture vs attention to
detail) and thinking (creative vs standard
responses), in the moment. This helps us to see
beyond the immediate and obvious, which is
helpful when needing to solve problems.
In addition, positive emotions have been
found to undo or erase the lingering traces of
negative emotions. Negative emotions constrict
our abilities to think of rational and creative
options. Whereas positive emotions set us up to
be more tolerant and creative, and to generate
more options to life's challenges. So positive
emotions not only feel good, they help us pay
attention to the forest as well as the trees, be
more creative, and get over emotional hurts
The model highlights how positive emotions,
over time, help build our personal and social
resources, which leads to increased well-being.
When we engage in spontaneous play we build
our physical resources and capabilities.
When we engage in activities that stimulate
interest and learning, we build our intellectual
resources. When we engage in social encounters,
we build our social resources.
Positive emotions help us create and sustain
the activities that promote the growth of
physical, intellectual and social resources that we
can draw on at later times. So positive emotions,
again, not only feel good in the moment, but
creating and having them are like making a really
good investment such that later on down the
track you can live healthily off the interest.
Be in the driver's seat and not the passenger's
seat. Create the mindset that generates these
positive experiences as highlighted by
Fredrickson: Be open, appreciative, curious, kind,
and real. Invest in your health and well-being for
immediate dividends and long term gains; invest
in more positive emotion in your life.
