Recently one of the jewellers from my
Cleveland studio described the
inspiration behind her beautiful
tourmaline design. This is what Angela
"The thing that attracts me most to
tourmalines is their intense fire; they're
incredibly eye catching and appear to take the
light and trap it within their facets. They come in
all colours of the rainbow so there's one to suit
I was given this stone to do a design for and I
chose to make it into a ring. I used 18ct white
gold as I felt it complemented the pink in the
stone. I used diamonds in my design as I wanted
to match the brilliance in the shoulders of the
band with the intensity of the stone.
I feel that the height of the setting really takes
advantage of its size and colour and has made it a
really stand-out ring.
I decided to try something new in the base of
the band by cutting it and flaring it in the
opposite direction and soldering some feature
pieces in the back. I found the piece challenging.
I am excited with the end result;it really adds that
special handmade touch you don't find in the
It's a great ring to wear as a dress ring and for
cocktail parties as it really glitters under lights.
The colour of this tourmaline is such a vibrant
and elegant shade of pink and the diamonds
really add that special sparkle factor. It won't go
unnoticed on your hand; come in and try it on
We live in a world hyped up on current
affairs. And gossip. And sometimes
there is little difference between
News used to come once a day via a
morning newspaper or nightly TV show. Now
we are drip-fed information 24/7.
Some old codger once said that
information is power -- and it's true.
Although sometimes it might feel as if we
have access to too much information and
sensationalist reporting, which can lead to
whole populations of frightened people. But,
if used wisely, the information boom can be
hugely advantageous. Underneath all the
toing and froing about political battles and
oil spills lie values. And values are what make
us who we are -- as well as interesting at
It can be difficult to keep up when news is
updated every few minutes. So, exercise
discernment -- the "story of the day" may not
always be the most essential.
Don't panic. Find a range of online and
print-media sources you trust.
And don't be afraid to hop on sites that
don't share your views -- it's important to see
how people who have differing opinions
think, not just because you can formulate a
better argument against them but because
it's wise to consider all points of view.
Arrange for regular newspaper deliveries
and online news podcasts and alerts that can
be delivered straight to your phone.
Most importantly, don't let it all wash over
you. If you want to keep up with current
affairs, make time to read and absorb the
information you've requested.

What saying would I like to be
remembered for? That we don't need
to prove anything to anybody; we have
to be happy with who we are and with
the life we make for ourselves.
