Winter is upon us and so is the flu
season. Some breeze through this
time of year; others catch every bug
within cooee. Research shows that the state of
one's health results not just from one's physical
constitution but that emotions and
psychological factors also play a role.
Emotions can be the result of how we think
and what we do. Positive emotions are good for
your health both in the short term, feel good
factor, and in the long term the benefits may
extend life by preventing the onset or
progression of major health problems.
Negative emotions are associated with
unhealthy patterns of physiological functioning
including lowered immune system activity and
heightened cardiovascular system reactivity.
This increases susceptibility to illness (eg
common cold, respiratory virus), disease and the
progression of some cancers.
Certain thinking habits predispose us to
chronic mood states, which compromises overall
physical health. Enhancing emotions by
changing how we think and what we do can
shape our health positively.
Positive emotions can boost immune system
functionality, reduce cardiovascular stress,
protect against progression of an existing
condition, increase attention to health-relevant
information, and promote healthy proactive
behaviour such as planning for future health
outcomes and life goals.
How do we harness the benefits of positive
emotions and undo the effects of negative
emotions? Engage in activities that generate

positive emotions: doing things that you know
are pleasurable for you for short term lifts.
For longer term benefits, do healthy activities
that become a part of your daily routine. Use
relaxation (yoga, tai chi, meditation), exercise,
positive imagery, laughter, helping others, and
looking for positive meaning in life's experiences.
Engaging in activities that cultivate positive
emotions and developing thought patterns that
are flexible, creative and receptive produces a
more robust foundation for handling life.
Positive emotions may protect our health
against the development of illness and disease.
Think of positive emotions as a way of
immunising against life's hurts. The more you
engage in activities that promote positive
emotions and enduring positive moods, the
better your body's natural first line of defence
against all those winter nasties. This is not a quick
fix; this is a habit to develop and maintain for a
lifetime in order to reap the benefits. Get started:
get positive, get healthy!
